Debate - Elementary and Middle School (Grade 4~8) Why debate?
Develop confidence for public speaking
Enhance communication skills
Learn to fairly compare pros and cons without having bias
Improve critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
HAVE FUN!!
What is debate in High School like?
There are many types of debate events such as Public Forum (the one I do), Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, and World Schools. Debate also offers many fun experiences, such as visiting colleges (Harvard, UPenn, UofM, UCB, UCLA) and traveling (Boston, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Berkeley).
General format: 2 versus 2
Topics are about current events and require both logic and evidence to construct arguments.
Debaters have short speeches and “crossfires” where debaters can directly question the opposing team. At the end of each round, an adult judge will decide the winner.
